Bulldog families came together Sept. 26 during Family Weekend for a service project hosted by BARC, assembling 100 hygiene kits for the Union County Homeless Shelter. The project gave families an opportunity to spend time together while supporting individuals in the local community. Each hygiene kit included essential personal-care items such as deodorant, razors, washcloths, soap and other hygiene products.

The families quickly turned the assembly process into a team effort. Without needing a detailed system assigned to them, participants took the initiative to organize themselves and divide the tasks among the group. Their system proved effective. In less than 10 minutes, approximately 10 families worked together to prepare 100 hygiene kits for people in need.

“I love giving back to the community and coming together to support each other,” said one participating family member.

The quick turnaround highlighted the participants’ ability to communicate and collaborate. Families developed an assembly-line-style process, allowing each person to focus on a specific part of preparing the kits. Once completed, the kits were prepared to be donated to the Union County Homeless Shelter, providing personal-care necessities to people experiencing homelessness in the community.

For BARC, the service project provided an opportunity to incorporate community engagement into Family Weekend while allowing families to participate in a hands-on service experience. The project demonstrated how a small group effort can have a larger community impact.
