Wingate Football Sweeps UVA-Wise as they Move to 8-0

Staff Writer: Lauren Traufler

Wingate University, ranked number 12, continue their perfect season as they complete their homecoming victory over the UVA-Wise Cavaliers 45-13. Wingate improves their undefeated record to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the SAC.

In the first quarter, Wingate scored a total of 37 points and scored on their first drive when McLean Robertson drilled a 28-yard field goal. Matthew Ellis-White extended the Bulldog lead when he picked one off midfield and took it to the house for a 47-yard touchdown.

The Bulldogs had three touchdowns of at least 30-yards in their match-up against the Cavaliers.

Wingate also had 295 rushing yards and averaged 6.4 yards per rush. The first down ratio is outweighed by Wingate’s 22 to UVA-Wise’s 15.

Head Coach Joe Reich said that he was pleased with how this game went after he felt as though the Bulldogs did not play a “complete game” in the previous week’s game against Limestone. Reich has continued to say throughout this season to “dominate the moment” and wants to continue to take this season game by game.

This is the second time in three years that the Bulldogs have started their season 8-0. Regardless of the season starting strong, the Bulldogs have a tough game this weekend against Lenior Rhyne, who is the only other undefeated SAC team.

The match-up against LR will take place in Hickory, NC at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 2.
