Dr. Wright-Martin is excited for the next steps Wingate’s music department is taking.

Wingate University’s Department of Music is offering a new Music Industry concentration beginning this semester, preparing students for careers in the commercial music world through hands-on experience.

Students can explore the business and creative industries, building skills such as audio production, artist management, marketing and live-event planning.

“We are thrilled to introduce the Music Industry concentration as part of our ongoing commitment to preparing students for the dynamic landscape of the commercial music world,” said Dr. Jessie Wright-Martin, director of voice and chair of the Music Department at Wingate.

“This program will not only provide technical skills in areas such as audio production and event planning, but it will also foster creativity and entrepreneurial thinking. Our aim is to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of both the artistic and business facets of music, enabling them to thrive in various roles within the industry.”

The new concentration is crucial as it prepares students for a wide range of careers, from artist management to marketing and live-event coordination. It complements the existing Bachelor of Arts in Music major, which offers concentrations like Performance and Music Education, enabling a holistic approach to music education.

“Through hands-on experiences, students will gain practical skills that are essential for navigating the complexities of today’s commercial music landscape,” said Wright-Martin.

“This emphasis on experiential learning not only enhances their technical proficiency but also cultivates the creative and entrepreneurial skills that are vital for success in an increasingly competitive industry. The program will also include networking opportunities, internships and guest lectures from industry professionals, enhancing student exposure to real-world experiences and connections.”

The Bachelor of Arts in Music was added at Wingate during the 1980s. Wingate’s B.A. in Music program offers multiple concentrations, including Education, Performance and Church Music in addition to Music Industry. Students can also pursue a general B.A. in Music that encompasses performance, theory, history and composition.
