Wingate University has appointed Dr. Tara Ellis as the interim dean of the Thayer School of Education, bringing nearly a decade of experience to lead the school through a period of transition.
In her new role, Ellis will oversee the faculty and staff within the school, focusing on recruitment, retention and tackling the ongoing national teacher shortage.
Ellis, a seasoned educator, has been part of the Wingate community for nine years, previously serving as the undergraduate Education chair. Her appointment follows a series of transitions within the school, including the loss of former interim dean Dr. Charlesa Hann, who was named Wingate’s associate vice provost of online education earlier this year.
Ellis is dedicated to guiding the School of Education through its current transitions while also working toward key goals for both her personal growth and the school’s advancement.
“I want to ensure that I am accessible to both students and faculty and try to hear them out and respond to their needs,” Ellis said.
Ellis is also committed to strengthening the School of Education’s programs, expanding recruitment efforts and reaching out to both current students and incoming freshmen interested in education careers.

Ellis’ journey to her new role began with her passion for Social Studies, a field she discovered during her time at UNC Chapel Hill as part of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program.
After getting established in a job teaching in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system, Ellis developed a greater passion for education. After receiving a job opportunity to work in higher education, she began working as an advisor at UNC Charlotte, where she earned her Ph.D.
Her career path ultimately brought her to Wingate University, where she has made a lasting impact.
Despite her interim status, Ellis is enthusiastic about the role and looks forward to continuing the work of supporting future educators. The search for a more permanent dean will be ongoing throughout this semester.
