The Wingate Triangle brought home three awards Feb. 22 at the North Carolina College Media Association Conference at Appalachian State University. Student journalists from across the state gathered in Boone for the annual event that features lectures from media professionals who offered critiques of their work, various writing seminars and an awards ceremony.

Wingate competed in a category against schools with enrollments of no more than 8,500 students. Elon University, which has about 7,800 students, was the big winner on the day, winning several high-profile awards.

In the Sportswriting category, Wingate’s Dylan Kirchner, a senior Biology major from Cranberry Township, Pa., and May Strategic Communication graduate Ashley Stein of Wilmington won second place for their piece on the triathlon team’s string of collisions involving vehicles while training on Wingate’s narrow backroads.

Jamaria Walton, a senior Sports Media major from Union, S.C., also won in the Sportswriting category, receiving honorable-mention honors for her article on the Wingate field hockey team’s Szymborski sisters.

Junior Journalism majors Emarie Tucker of Indian Trail and Avery Hill from Marshville won in the Feature Writing category, getting an honorable mention for their story on the Wingate’s tattoo shop on Main Street, Jay’s Custom Tattooing.

The NCCMA awards are held annually to honor student journalists and provide opportunities to network with professionals, receive feedback on their work and connect with peers. This is the second consecutive year the Triangle has won three awards.
