Three Wingate lacrosse players have been arrested and charged by
local police in connection with a spree of license-plate thefts that occurred
during the first week of the fall semester.
Sophomores Joseph Moran (19) and Jaxon Grant (18) and freshman
Carter Moon (18) were arrested on Aug. 19 after an investigation by the
Wingate Police Department and Campus Safety Chief Mike Easley.
Easley said in an e-mail sent to students on Aug. 21 that nine plates had been
reported missing, but all of them were recovered after the arrests were
made.
According to the police report, Wingate Patrol Officer Jake Henry
arrested Moran and Grant at Helms Residence Hall at around 8:30 on a
Saturday night and, two hours later, apprehended Moon at J.M. Smith Hall.
Moran and Grant have been charged with misdemeanor larceny and
possession of stolen goods, while Moon was arrested for aiding and
abetting.
Both from New York state, Moran and Grant were significant
contributors to the Bulldogs’ lacrosse team as freshman midfielders last
year, each playing 10 games with Moran scoring 16 goals with three assists
and Grant totaling eight goals and eight assists.
Moon is a true freshman from Lothian, Md., who plays attack and
midfield.
A resident assistant at the university who asked not to be identified
said it has been speculated that the student-athletes were playing a “game”
to collect license plates from all 50 states.
A morning court date on Sept. 11 has been set for all three in District
Court at the Union County Courthouse in Monroe.
