Limestone notched its fifth consecutive shutout on Saturday, defeating Wingate 0-2 in Gaffney. Despite the loss, sophomore goalkeeper Jens Bergendorff recorded a season-high four saves for the Bulldogs.
The Saint’s sophomore midfielder Jacob Hancock took command of the field early, scoring 76 seconds in. Kobie Vasquez, Soren Nygaard, and Pedro Santos each took shots late in the half, but Limestone preserved its 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs’ Fabio Rodrigues put a shot on frame in the 59th minute and Santos hit the post in the 72nd though neither freshman midfielder met the net. Instead, Hancock struck again; the Manchester native scored an insurance goal at the 60-minute mark. Jackson Hollenbach, a senior defender for Wingate- made a final attempt in the 89th minute but the score remained unchanged. Limestone now stands 5-1; Wingate 2-4-1.
“We’re still the champions, but not the favorites of winning the SAC tournament this year,” sophomore defender Niclas Wittur said. “So we should just get out there and play like we have nothing to lose anymore because the talent is still there. As soon as we start winning again we can talk about tactics, but for now we have to make sure to take every game as our final. You play a final to win and not to play pretty.”
Next, the Bulldogs take on Newberry at Pride Park, October 2.
