Seven men’s basketball players enter transfer portal

From staff reports

Taylor dunks during a competitive season for the Bulldogs.

The Wingate men’s basketball team has lost seven players to the transfer portal, including Division 2 All-American Kendall Taylor, according to recruiting website Verbal Commits.

Taylor, a 6-5 forward with one year of eligibility remaining who led the Bulldogs in points (24.4 per game), rebounds (8.1) and assists (4.6) last season, has committed to Division 1 College of Charleston. He will join a Cougars program coming off a 24-9 season and third-place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association under second-year head coach Chris Mack, who previously led the Louisville and Xavier basketball programs.

“Kendall is the definition of a player who’s been underrated and has worked in the shadows to become the type of player he is today,” said Mack in a statement released by the school. “Kendall’s versatility is the first thing an observer will notice. He can score the ball inside and out, rebound and pass. He’s a Swiss Army knife that wants to win and we can’t wait to work with him beginning this summer.”

Another former Bulldog making a transfer commitment is 6-2 sophomore guard Matty Foor, who is leaving for fellow South Atlantic Conference member Newberry, coached by former Wingate assistant Marcus Kirkland.

Matty Foor is leaving Wingate to play for Newberry.

Wingate players who have entered the portal but remain unsigned are forward Javon Calmese, guard Lewis Richards and post players Blessed Barhayiga, Aaron Hall and Reid Loewen.

The Bulldogs still return four players who started on at least a part-time basis last season in guards Jordan Miller, Corbin Pack, Mike Erbeck and Jaden Lingo.

The loss of Taylor comes as a blow to a program seeking to rebuild after a 12-15 season.
