A female Wingate nursing student and former member of the university’s swim team is still in critical condition this week after suffering severe injuries in an ATV accident that took place on the private property of a WU professor on Sept. 22 in Peachland.

Emma Forman and another unidentified female nursing student at Wingate whose injuries weren’t as critical were transported to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after the accident, which occurred late on a Friday night.

Anson County EMS and local authorities responded to a call from the residence near Caudle Road at around 11:00, nine miles away from campus. Members of the university’s swim team told WSOC News that Forman, a senior from Middletown, Del., was in the ICU and has a long recovery ahead.

There were no university-sponsored events set for the residence that evening and Wingate officials are investigating what the students were doing at the professor’s house. The name of the professor is not known but school officials indicated that the teacher is not currently on leave.

It has not yet been released whether alcohol was involved but the incident is under active investigation by Anson County authorities.

Forman spent two years on the university’s swim team as a backstroker and freestyler, according to WU officials, but is no longer an active member of the squad.

There is a GoFundMe set up for Forman and her family to cover hospital bills, travel expenses and hotel costs. It has raised almost $16,000 as the university has come together to try to help out the victims of the crash as much as possible.

“The university is providing support services to the students, and we are praying for their full recovery,” a Wingate spokesperson told WSOC.
